china: the signs

I'm overwhelmed with the task of organizing and editing my China photographs. There are too many, and I'm struggling with what to keep and what to toss. The good old days of film made this task a whole lot easier. Also, a small part of me has felt disheartened when I look at my photos next to the deliciousness of English hubby's images. Yes yes yes, comparisons are futile blah blah blah.

Anyway, I've always known that the key to unblocking myself is by starting somewhere, however banal.

One of my many delights while traveling through southern China was observing signs and how well they translated into English. Or not.

On another note, Sweetpea started recognizing Chinese characters on our trip, and figured out what EXIT looked like from the door signs in our hotels. On our various flights, she would pull the Emergency Information Card out of the seat pocket (to learn her evacuation routes in case of a disaster, of course) and start picking out the characters for "Exit". She's obviously brilliant.

She included this page in her journal that she kept for school:

And here she is, hard at work, in one of the very few times we actually sat in one place long enough to do schoolwork. Mostly she did her drawings and journal on the bus, plane, and even a boat.

What a good girl.
