Finding significant time to perform service in the community (because Barack says we should!) or do volunteer work is sometimes difficult, so I figured that at the very least I could use the sidebar of this blog as a way to highlight some of the folks out there who need a little assistance. As a friend said recently (more eloquently than I could), we've all been touched by the economic downturn but it feels like it's even more crucial to spare a dollar or two when and if we can.

Maria Mikell is a woman in my community who was tragically caught in the crossfire of a gun battle recently, leaving behind her 17 year old son. He's apparently a gifted athlete and intelligent, mature young man who would love to go to college.
The Deckers suffered a stunning blow a year ago when Carol Decker had complications after giving birth to their (healthy) baby girl. She ended up blind and having both her lower legs and one arm amputated after receiving life-saving medication, which ultimately blocked bloodflow to areas of her body. She's doing so much better, but the family could use financial assistance to cope with the medical bills. A three-day auction starts Sunday June 14 to raise funds for the family.UPDATE:

The March of Dimes is an organization which supplies vital information and support to families with premature babies. The Spohrs lost their beautiful toddler Maddie recently, who was born at 28 weeks gestation and had many breathing/lung issues since her birth, but was a beautiful and happy child who seemed to be on her way to a healthy future.
I know none of these people personally but their lives have touched mine through this crazy internet community. Please read more about their stories if you're interested, and pass it on....
