This past weekend we made a spontaneous decision based on scientifically arrived at data (English hubby's sister, English Auntie, who now lives in L.A., was available; and friends with extra free tickets to Disneyland happened to be heading down). Other than the fact that we really couldn't afford it, we decided that all the mitigating factors were too strongly weighted in our favour, so we kissed a sad good-bye to my parents on Thursday and hopped in the car on Friday for a roadtrip to Anaheim.
This would be Sweetpea's (and English hubby's for that matter) first visit to see the Mouse.
Here she is moments after entering the gates. The anticipation was high.
We met various characters most of whom she'd never heard of, but she wanted to hug them all anyway, even the inanimate ones. Mickey was elusive all weekend, but Goofy did a fly by which was so speedy we didn't even get a photo.
Sweetpea's friend A is obviously pondering his options - does he keep quiet or state his true feelings about women drivers?
Later, all three were stunned into silence on a quiet boat ride through Story Book land.
Even English hubby, whose first impulse in most situations is to employ cynicism, dropped his veneer and claimed "It was awesome. I loved it."
After two days in the park, too many rides to count, cotton candy, chocolate, meeting up with English Auntie in the afternoon, it was all just too much for him.
Sweetpea however was still raring to go.
As English hubby's and my energy flagged, English Auntie stepped in.
That is one happy kid.
We rode "It's a Small World" three times.
And ultimately closed the park at 10 p.m. watching the fireworks.
The drive there and particularly back home was brutal, especially when Disneyitis (as my friend put it) set in on the hour and a half 30 mile drive through L.A. when the smell of smog suffused the car and we turned around to see Sweetpea vainly trying to save her pretty dress by vomiting into her hands.
Other than that small hiccup (no pun intended), the inaugural Disneyland visit was a roaring success. English hubby can't wait to go back.
You can thank me later for putting that song into your head for the rest of your day.

one of the highlights of our life so far was the trip to the the Florida version with the China Beach crew -- it was lovely so see the West Coast version.
ReplyDeletewhat a lovely treat to offset the departure of your parents.
hope the return home wasn't too much of a lunch bag letdown.
That sounds fun! The shine in sweetpea's eyes. I can imagine it was exhausting (your hubby in one of those photos looks wiped out!) The long drive anywhere is always the worst--that's too bad she threw up on her pretty dress.
ReplyDeleteI just sang that song in my head this morning when my daughter mentioned mickey, now it will be in my head for sure.
I'm glad you put that one of english hubby's scrunchy face. Perfect. Glad to be a part of Sweetpea's first visit. In her words "It was awesome!"
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful! I love this post! Disneyland is my favorite! I'm so glad you got to go and have a great time. Every kid should get to have that experience.
ReplyDeleteAww.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos, great trip!
Beautiful film editing. Ahh to have my sister's talents.
ReplyDeleteAll sounded wonderful!
Yaaaay Disney! I love some of the photos that you captured of your little girl- Disney is so magical. I'm going to drag Army Boy early next year and hope that I can get some similar shots. :)
ReplyDeleteHow did you survive "It's a Small World" 3 times? You must have the patience of a saint.
